Mole House

Located in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, this high tech post production facility masquerades as a comfortable and luxurious house. Like some of its neighboring residential apartments, it boasts hand painted raised paneling, brass hardware, comfortable living rooms, and a well-stocked kitchen. However, the traditional detailing hides the wealth of digital infrastructure hiding in walls, ceilings and floors. Only the edit bays and machine room expose the sophistication of what remains unseen within the social spaces. This stark juxtaposition between the high tech and homey creates a new typology of working environment, where focused work and more leisurely creativity can exist side by side but remain bracketed. The spatial differences create both visual and social cues to encourage different types of occupation, and a respite from often long and focused hours of editing activity. In this facility the home and the office co-exist but don’t overlap.
