Hudson Valley Farmhouse Bedroom One of our favorite bedrooms from our Hudson Valley Farmhouse project is this sun filled room with three twin beds for kids and friends. Wood floors within certain rooms were painted vibrant colors and contrasted with pale walls and matching trim. Bright American quilts and simple vintage pieces such as this punched tin pie chest create layers of pattern, color and texture in an otherwise spare space and make typically country furnishings and accessories much more contemporary. Modern Barn Renovation in New York’s Hudson Valley We love this photo of our project in New York’s Hudson Valley. We renovated a 19th century dairy barn into a studio for an artist. We kept the existing historic elements such as the timber framing and divided light windows, but also added large new openings such as the one seen here. An over-scaled glass pocket door slips into the wall to allow large sculptures and canvases to be brought in and out of the space. When open, the fields, pastures and hills beyond become a visceral part of the space. Little Peek Porch Installation Many of you have asked us about the central screened porch space in our Little Peek house: whether parts of it are glass, how it works, and what the installation process was like given that this house in on a small island in Maine. We were incredibly lucky to work with a great metalworking shop on the mainland who specializes in marine construction such as building docks. They were able to fabricate our porch elements in their shop, partially assemble, and then bring the pieces over to Vinalhaven on their barge. Then, their boom truck took the pieces to the site and their amazing crew installed the porch frame over two days. Fun fact: the entire screened porch frame weighs under 300 pounds. Simplicity, Balance, and a Refined Palette Our Black Barn project is a working farm building surrounded by grazing cattle and the rolling hills of New York’s Hudson Valley. While designing this project we drove through the county backroads documenting other barns and outbuildings to study and understand what gives many such buildings the simple grace that makes them so appealing. We tried to distill these qualities into a new barn that focuses on simplicity, balance, and a refined color and material palette to create a modern structure that feels both timeless and at home among the surrounding animals and hills. BHS Custom Lighting Maybe it’s the glimmers of hope in NYC that’s making us think about light this week and the magic and brightness that it can bring to a room. But a light fixture can have equal power during the day when its own sculptural form takes precedence over the light that emanates from within. In this light-filled home in New Orleans, renovated for dear friends, the black leather pendant in the dining room creates a goth counterpoint to the vibrant colors and traditional shapes of the furniture, bringing light and darkness into balance. Gardenista’s Garden Design 101 BHS is mentioned in Gardenista’s “10 Ideas to Steal from Organic Gardens Around the World” from their Garden Design 101 series. Our Black Barn project is highlighted for its use of simple forms and materials to create a sense of accretion over time, as if the space could have been renovated and added to over many years BHS Featured in House & Garden’s Design Directory The List, House & Garden’s indispensable directory for those looking for design professionals for their homes and gardens, featured BHS and highlighted some of our recent residential projects. Read the full profile here. Welding Shed Boston Ivy The gable elevation of our Welding Shed project. The traditional barn shape found throughout New England was reinterpreted in a clean industrial poured concrete structure. The severity of the form is softened by Boston ivy that was planted around the entire periphery of the building and trained up the concrete. Over time the ivy has enveloped the building, adding a living layer of green leafiness. Because this ivy is deciduous, the colder months allow the concrete to re-emerge, subtly tattooed with the ivy’s bare branches. More Photos of Little Peek Excited to share a few more photos of Little Peek from photographer Greta Rybus. The project, recently featured in Dwell Magazine, is named Little Peek because as you walk up the footpath from the water you get little peeks of the house through the pine and spruce trees and over the huckleberry bushes and rocky outcroppings. BHS Featured in Remodelista’s Architect & Designer Directory Remodelista featured our Pine Plains projects, which included painting and sculpture studios, the renovation of a historic house and the design of residential interiors, and a barn complex to house livestock.
