Shadow Barns

Brookhaven, NY

Completion 2023

Long Island’s South Shore was once home to many thriving agricultural communities. With time and development most of these historic farmsteads were lost. Our project reimagines and recreates the memory of these structures as a gathering of dark gray barns clad in shadowy silver wood. The public facing side has small punched windows that maintain privacy and reinterprets fenestration seen on such historic buildings. The private facing facades are glassy to better capture the light, views and and ocean breezes. The spaces within are connected as an enfilade, linking rooms and uses into a single narrative through the house. The gabled rooms look onto a meadow of wild grasses and flowers, intimately connected to the land.
