Design Process

Founded by Maria Berman and Brad Horn in 2006, Berman Horn Studio is an award-winning, full service, multidisciplinary firm that spans architecture, interiors, furniture and lighting design in order to create exciting residential, hospitality and commercial spaces. We are inspired by a close collaboration with our clients to create highly personalized spaces rich in narrative, history, authenticity and with a profound sense of context. We believe that great design isn’t just defined by walls, surfaces, furniture and lighting, but rather finds fullest expression through the incorporation of narrative to create spaces full of emotion, memory and potential. Whether a home, a restaurant or an office, our spaces thrive when filled with people, and alive to the stories yet to be told.

Our work has been recognized in numerous publications including Architectural Digest, Dwell, the New York Times, Architectural Record, Interior Design, and Decor Maine, as well in several books such as The Maine House from Vendome Press, Remodelista in Maine from Artisan, and many others.

Where We Work

Berman Horn Studio is based in New York and Maine, but works throughout the United States. We have designed and built residential projects in Los Angeles, Boston, New Orleans, Miami and across the Hudson Valley. Our NCARB Certification credential facilitates licensure across all states in the country. We are always excited to engage new environments, cities, and local cultures and to explore design as something deeply rooted in the specificity of place.

PARTNER

Maria Berman, RA

A registered architect in the state of New York, Maria comes to architecture and design with a background in fine art, art history and art conservation. Always drawn to the stories that lie within spaces and things, Maria completed undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Chicago and New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts before spending several years working in NYC museums where she took care of the artifacts within their collections. Inspired by history, and in order to participate in the creation of the built environment, Maria completed her Master of Architecture Degree at Columbia University GSAPP. She focuses on the intersection of the past and the present and the ways in which spaces are created through the layering of design, objects and experience.

PARTNER

Brad Horn, NCARB

Brad was inspired to study architecture by his grandfather, whose architectural drafting tools still have pride of place in Berman Horn Studio’s office. Brad received his Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union, his Master of Architecture from Columbia University GSAPP and is a registered architect in New York, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Maine. He brings a limitless imagination to the creation of spaces that feel both unique and timeless, unbound by convention but instantly inviting. Brad teaches design at The City College of New York, Bernard & Anne Spitzer School of Architecture and has contributed writing to several books and journals on the subjects of architectural education & design theory.
